Test where you actually watch
A fast speed test is not a guarantee of uninterrupted video. Check the connection on the viewing device, or as close to it as possible. A phone beside the router may have a much better signal than a television in another room. Compare results at different times, especially when the interruptions normally happen.
Ask for requirements suited to your service
Video resolution affects bandwidth, but encoding and compression matter too. Ask for a recommendation matched to the service and quality you intend to use instead of relying on a universal speed threshold. Stability, competing traffic and the device’s own performance can all affect the result.
Try Ethernet if possible
A network cable removes the Wi-Fi link from the test. It will not repair a provider outage, but it can show whether wireless reception contributes to the problem. Check that your device has the correct network port or supported adapter before buying equipment. Compare the same programme under similar conditions.
Improve Wi-Fi step by step
Avoid placing the router inside a closed cabinet or far from the devices you use. Test temporarily closer to it. Building materials, obstacles and frequency bands behave differently in different homes, so judge by a real test rather than a network name alone. Change one thing at a time and record whether it helps.
Allow for other household use
Large downloads, backups and video calls share your connection. Pause heavy transfers briefly during diagnosis, then test again under normal conditions. If you use mobile data or a capped plan, monitor total usage as well as speed. A short successful test does not show how much data a full evening will consume.
When the network seems healthy
Try several included programmes and note the time of failure. If only one channel fails while others work, report that difference to support. Repeatedly restarting the router may hide the pattern without finding the cause. Our buffering guide provides the next checks and explains which information helps us investigate.
